Myanmar Airstrike Kills Over 50 at Rakhine Market, Bridge
The attack hit an area currently held by an opposition group. The aircraft targeted the Kissapanadi (Kaladan) Bridge and the busy market known as the “Indian Market,” where pedestrians, shoppers and laborers were among the casualties, the outlet reported.
The strike on Kyauktaw, a coastal town on the banks of the Kaladan River, ranks among the deadliest since junta leader Min Aung Hlaing was elected president in April this year.
Myanmar has been gripped by a protracted civil war that escalated after Min Aung Hlaing ousted an elected government in February 2021. Several ethnic opposition groups are now fighting his government across multiple regions of the country.
Rakhine is home largely to the Rohingya, a predominantly Muslim community that has faced persecution by the junta as well as by other opposition groups. Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have been driven out of the Buddhist-majority Southeast Asian nation over the years.
